Demons in your room

[Hi, it's Jere here again and since my sister won't be blogging for a while (SPM and all) I thought I'd just let you know about some research I dug up some time ago, trying to figure out what occurred to me one fateful night.]

Has this ever happened to you?

Two weeks ago, I woke up in the middle of the night with my back glued to the mattress, wondering what time it was. But it was only when I tried to roll over so I could check check my watch that I realized that I couldn't. I couldn't move, I couldn’t even open my eyes. I was a frozen, skinny, hunk of flesh. But I knew I was awake because, well, I could think. And not potatoes coming alive and eating you kind of thinking. Proper thinking.

And it gets freakier. I could feel someone pressing against my chest and constricting my breathing. My eyelids felt like stone so cracking them open was a lot like opening that jar you left at the back of the fridge for months. But when I finally succeeded in prying my eyelids apart, what I saw (HOLY CRAPP) made me freak out - On my chest was this human form in a hoodie trying to strangle me.

I could feel its icy cold hand wrapped around my neck and starting to tighten in grip. My eyes flew shut and I said a short prayer hoping that the evil entity - Or whatever it was - would go away (Right, because that works all the time in movies). The rest was a blur, I don't know, maybe I was in shock. But the next thing I knew, it was morning, sunlight streaming in and not a freaky hooded perv in sight.

When we were younger, adults used to tell my sister and me that there was some sort of otherworldly explanation: Demons, ghosts, possession, the works right? So after that  night, I did what any self-respecting adolescent of the 21st century would do. I Googled it.
A Sleep Paralysis is possibly a hereditary disorder in which one experiences very frightening seconds or minutes of [Blah blah blah] total body paralysis with little respiration and eye movements (1). A victim in this state feels [Hurm hurm hurm] awake, but he cannot move or speak (2). In addition to the immobility, the common symptoms include feeling choked or suffocated, hearing strange noises like footsteps and voices, seeing beings or dark shadows, and feeling an existance of someone in the room (1). Although these symptoms often direct the victims to believe in ghosts, mistransmission of neural signals in the brain causes Sleep Paralysis. When a person sleeps, his brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contraction (3). If he comes into consciousness before the brain sends signals to activate muscle contraction, he cannot move his body, and consequently, become "paralyzed"(2).
-Hiro Takahashi

See? Nothing but Old Hag Syndrome.
Turns out all I was experiencing was Hypnapompic (As you are waking up) Sleep Paralysis. Huh. Guess I'm not so special any more.

So give it to me short and sweet. What is sleep paralysis?
Basically, sleep paralysis is when you find yourself unable to make voluntary movements except your eyes either when you’re falling asleep (Hypnagogic), or waking up from it (Hypnapompic) for a period of time. Sometimes, hallucinations are also associated. Like Hooded Perv over there.

Here’s the real kicker though: We all experience sleep paralysis - also known as "nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis" (Is it just me or does that sound like a really really big turn off? Really? Just me?). During REM sleep, our brain sends signals to prohibit any muscle contractions. It's what keeps us from acting out our dreams so you don't see people on the news walking into rooms and chopping people up. At least not on a constant basis.

And it's caused by....?
According to Wikipedia (Because everyone knows that Wikipedia never lies), the most plausible causes of Sleep Paralysis or Old Hag Syndrome are

  • Sleeping in a face upwards position [Check]
  • Increased stress [Check]
  • Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes [Check]
  • A luccid dream that immediately precedes the episode [Check]
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol coupled with inadequate sleep [No wait what? Me? Pftt...]

Doing The Edward.
Bet you wouldn't mind this in your room
Hold on, Lucid Dreaming? What's that?
Again, I'm glad you asked. Lucid dreaming is when you’re aware that its just a dream...when you’re dreaming. A lot like Inception.

So how do you incur lucid dreaming more often? One of the techniques that works for me is to check your watch or clock as often as possible during the day until it becomes practically habitual. That way, when you're dreaming you’ll know it isn’t real because you'll notice that the hands on every clock or watch look blurry (Which they usually do in dreams, as do faces).

Also you could try waking up 5 hours after you sleep then stay awake for about 15 minutes before going back to sleep. This will trigger Rapid Eye Movement sleep (Or REM). Then you’ll start dreaming xD

Out of body experience anyone?
But it's not just about getting the shite scared out of you. As it turns out, there might be an added advantage to Sleep Paralysis. Studies show that people who suffer from conscious sleep paralysis have an advantage if they want to have out of body experiences.

You know those shows where Girl In Coma inadvertently oversees Boyfriend Of Girl In Coma express his undying love/ cheating the pants off her with the nurse?

Well it's something like that.

There's still a crapload, however, that science can't explain about the mechanisms of our brain. And even though the current hypothesis appears to reject the possibility of ghosts on this matter, we can't completely rule out the possibility of ghosts or demons affecting one's behavior.

However, it's safe to say that like many unnatural occurrences (E.g. love) you can pin the blame on your brain for this.

So now I'd like to know, how many people out there have experienced SP before? Anyone?

Yes, and.I practice out of body quite often, my lack of sleep due to working around the clock lends to dreaming about what your writing and interacting with your own conceptual world. But unlike inception unless your ver fortunate you cannot enter someone elses dream.

Lol but what a hoot that would be if we could, wouldn't it? Hahaha I applaud you, sir. Still trying to figure out how to lucid dream myself.

what do your dream about usually?

normally, it happens when I take afternoon naps. I stop taking naps when it happened a few times. I don't like that suffocating feeling.. ><

i experience astral projection a lot. aside from being unable to move when it happens, i also hear many voices. i even see myself while sleeping.. :))

Punk Chopsticks said...

@Teddi: thats so cool!! Lol Is that on a constant basis or occasionally?

@Joey: Lol this is Punk Chopsticks, and I've never actually experienced it before. Only my brother...at least you didn't freak out x)

@Mike: Lol WOW that was fast xD Your experiences are probably the most interesting I've heard of so far. What the hell are you on, dude?

Thank goodness I haven't experienced Sleep Paralysis yet, though it has a scientific explanation, it's still way too creepy for me. Can't take out the superstition out of this Asian gal haha. But I did have my share of lucid dreams. I kept telling myself: this isn't real. Though I think it's quite silly of me to keep telling myself that in my dreams =.= Should've just gone with the flow hahah

That would be sooo scary. It's interesting because I was just talking with my husband about stuff like this.

He said, "When you sense great evil, it's a sign that great good exists as well."

I cracked xD I've read about sleep paralysis before. Not sure where. I don't really dream =/ When I do, I forget them =( That was one creepy dream you had, mate O_O

I've heard all about lucid dreaming before but I feel glad to be able to say sleep paralysis has never occurred for me, yet at least!

For some reason I forgot to click to follow your blog and just thought you hadn't updated since I first read some of your posts, I'm following now though!

@chichi: LMAO! I know exactly what you mean!! Last night I couldn't sleep and I was like I DON'T WANT SOME SCARY GUY TO STRANGLE ME!!! xD ah well, I guess we've been conditioned for too long. Btw, why did you Lucid dream about?

@Elisabeth: your husband sounds so cool!!! And yeah it makes a lot of sense, newtons law: every action has an equal and opposite reaction xD what were Yiu talking about exactly?

@areesha: lol! I know right? Well, I didn't have it, jere did. But it still sounds creepy xD why don't you have nay new posts?? D:

Punk Chopsticks said...

@lonely: lol yeah that's sorta why I chose it xD

@my two pesos: lol then go and try to have one! It's not that hard, but there's a method to the madness, I guess you just have to get used to it first.

@Jessica: LOL you are WEIRD!!! I love vampire night! But aren't those all shojo?

Punk Chopsticks said...

@yeamie waffles: ahahahaha don't sweat it lah, xD. I've never experienced it neither. Really don't want too, it sounds too freaky. But who knows right? Just sleep well and it won't happen I guess.

@Adam: lol it's weird, I think I stopped having nightmares after childhood... I want nightmares!!

Teddi said...

lucid dreams on occasion. remembering dreams frequently. keeping a dream journal can help, or sometimes haunt. parts of dreams coming true in the form of deja vu, is sporadic. isn't it all your interpretation, & personal symbolism?

I have out of body experiences all the time. It's a gift.

Hoooooooly crap. I have never experienced anything like that and I was freaked out to even read your entry. I haven't had a nightmare that bad for a while.

Mich said...

you know you're about to sleep.. like slipping back and forth the borders of conscious and unconsciousness ? then you thought you were walking/riding bike and you suddenly fall down the drain ? i get that a LOT ! haha. anyways, yeahhh ! your brother don't look his age. wayy younger ! :D you taking spm ? good luck ay ! =D

Snowbrush said...

What an interesting experience. I had to sleep on my back for years, but I never encountered anything like that (although I've heard of it). I really wish I had though. Maybe sleep paralysis was the source of stories about incubi and succubi.

Cal's Canadian Cave of Coolness said...

I never found any proof of anything weird like this despite reading and reasearching everything I could get my hands on as a kid. I do believe you can control your mind to allow miraculous things. I wish I could sleep more than I do.

Eric Lee said...

I'm not sure who is the one writing the sister or the brother but i assume it's the brother from the beginning of the post. just wanna say thus is a well written post.

I never experienced any sleep paralysis before (never want to as well). Actually everyone dreams and i have a lot of lucid dreaming experience during my childhood. few times i even create the sequence of the dream on my own. felt good in dream but once awake, i will be slightly anxious as though my brain did not get enough rest...haha

Punk Chopsticks said...

@Teddi: Lol you'e right! When people looks for signs they can usually find them everywhere, which is how fortune tellers make a living I guess. Not be a skeptic or anything but...xD

@Joshua: Lol damn, I've always wanted to have that. What's it like?

@Aki!: Ahahahhaha it's not that bad lah...the worst being the fact that it wasn't a nightmare xD What was your last nightmare about?

Punk Chopsticks said...

@Mich: LOL! Wait do you mean younger than he looks or looks younger than he is? 0.o Btw, thanks!! Hahaha I'll need it.

@Snowbrush: Lol it is actually! Shakespeare described this phenomena in act 1, scene 4 of romeo and juliet:This is the hag, when maids lie on their backs,
That presses them, and learns them first to bear,
Making them women of good carriage.

Punk Chopsticks said...

@Cal: Just follow the links I provided or google it yourself. I don't know about you, but in Malaysia, I keep hearing about it all the time, must be a normal occurrence.

@Eric: Lol well actually truth be told, my brother conceptualized the blog post and sent in his draft but I had to re-write the whole thing (Malay school does that to your english xD) and research it. But since it's his idea, I kept the beginning of the post xD Also, i'm not supposed to be blogging during SPM. Shhhhh!

I just meant, my husband had SP before. But he got so freaked out, he didn't know if it was something more. My mom's like that too LOL! She reads into things. But sometimes I guess there's more to see than what's on the surface? Who knows ;)

Thanks for your awesome comment on my blog :0)

Google takes down another fairy tale explanation. With kids getting online at younger ages, I wonder how much longer Santa can survive. Interesting note about the use of clocks to start a lucid dream. I've heard a similar thing related to looking at your hands. Maybe I should start pointing at every clock I see.

Anyways, hope you have a great sleep tonight then! :)

I usually experience this when I sleep face up and when I'm very stressed. That's why I make it a habit that when I'm stressed, I sleep in a fetal position. Hahaha. And that never failed me! :))

I never want to experience this again because it's too freaky. I know it's just a product of my imagination, but still, it seems so real.

Jothi said...

I've experienced this quite a number of times. Interesting post, takes for sharing. It's food for thought indeed.
